Java job vacancies in Galway, Ireland
by Robert FullerGalway is a great place to live and work.
When I arrived to Galway from British Columbia in 1993 both Linux and Java were in their infancy. I had heard of neither - and why should I have - I was a carpenter.
Engaged to a Galway girl (there ain’t nothin’ like them, lads!), I was at that time entitled to a work permit, and went down to the Mill Street Garda station to get one. The conversation with the garda went something like this:
me: Hi, I am engaged to a Galway girl and I’d like to get a work permit.
garda: Where are you from?
me: Canada.
garda: What do you do?
me: I’m a carpenter.
garda: Go back to Canada, there’s no work here.
The following year I traded hardwood and softwood for hardware and software. Wow that was almost fifteen years ago.
The job situation is different here now. There are jobs for Java developers in Galway, and yes foreigners are welcome (permission to work in Europe is required).
Some of the companies I am aware of who have recently been hiring Java developers in Galway include:
Applepie Solutions (us)
ATFM Solutions
Celtrak
Cisco Systems
Duolog
Fisc Ireland (Fidelity Investments)
Nortel Networks
Know of other companies looking for java developers in Galway? Let me know and I’ll add a link here.

The gardai haven’t gotten any more cheerful or customer focused than when you came over. The Five-0 on the immigration desk at Shannon a week ago seemed to come from a similarly dismal personality type.

The immigration lady made me cry the 1st time I tried to get my student visa. I waited until I left empty-handed though, I think she would have gotten sick enjoyment from seeing it.
I’m 21 and a computer science major, will be graduating next May. Currently I’m looking at internships so I can have *some* sort of experience on my resume when I come back to Ireland after graduation to look for a job. Your story gives me hope but do you think I’ll run into trouble if I come looking for a job with minimal (maybe none if I can’t get an internship) experience nowadays?

Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again.
Franklin P. Jones
Yes, there is no substitute for experience, M. For a variety of reasons employers need people with experience and also they need less experienced people.
When interviewing candidates without experience, employers are really interested in finding people who have the right knowledge, attitude and aptitude; people who have spent time learning what they need to know, express a genuine interest in the job or the career, and who can demonstrate capability through indirect experience… for example college grades and projects.
Knowledge, aptitude and attitude - these are your assets when interviewing for a job. Adjust every cv/resume you send out, fine-tuning it for the target business.
When you do get called for interview (and you will!!!), don’t forget to dress well, smile and be polite! Don’t underestimate the power of presenting yourself well.
If you find that you are not getting the interviews you want, then do what it takes to get them - demonstrate your knowledge, aptitude and attitude through volunteer work. You’ll quickly build up the experience you are looking for and that job will be in your hand!
